I am a female Summer Tanager,

I'm yellow-green where my mate is red

We are not true Tanagers,

Taxonomy managers*

Say we are closer to Cardinals instead.

(* Yes, I know the proper term is "taxonomist", but that doesn't rhyme with "Tanager".)

I am a male Summer Tanager,

Superficially, I look like a Cardinal

But I don't have a crest

Nor black accents

In fact, other than red feathers, our similarities are marginal.

I am an adult male Summer Tanager
You know I'm not a Cardinal cause there's no black on my face.
I'm the only totally red bird in North America -
My kid's yellowish and so is my mate.

I am an immature male Summer Tanager,
I'm brightly colored, a real humdinger!
My favorite foods are bees and wasps,
Which I whack on branches to remove their stingers.
